Croton Reservoir Tavern sits at 108 West 40th Street, between Sixth Avenue and Broadway, one block from Bryant Park and five minutes from the theaters.
The name comes from the Croton Distributing Reservoir, a four acre lake behind fifty foot granite walls that stood on Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets from 1842 until 1899. New Yorkers walked the promenade on top of it. The New York Public Library and Bryant Park sit on that spot now. We are on the same street, two blocks west, with a hand painted mural of the reservoir covering 150 square feet of the dining room wall.
Upstairs is a fifty foot oak bar, leather banquettes and a dining room that fills for lunch and stays full through dinner. Downstairs is The Speakeasy, where the lights come down after dark, the music comes up, and a DJ plays on select nights. Happy hour runs down there Tuesday through Friday, four to eight.

Wings, flatbreads, and a mega pretzel to share. Burgers, brisket, and a hanger steak with house frites. Behind the bar, Croton Pilsner on draft alongside Weller, Blanton's, Pappy Van Winkle, and a Macallan run that goes to eighteen years.
